We honor Peter for his service to Texas and the Texas Holocaust & Genocide Commission as its first chairman of the commission and the extraordinary work he has accomplished in advancing the education of students, teachers and citizens on the Holocaust and genocides.

The Commission will host an annual three day conference for Texas teachers on Holocaust and genocide studies.  This fellowship will provide an in depth understanding of these topics taught by scholars in the subject matter.  Participants’ expenses (transportation, meals, housing, substitute teacher payments, and educational resources) will be paid through funds raised by the Friends of the Texas Holocaust & Genocide Commission. Upon conclusion of the conference each year, graduates will be known as Peter Berkowitz Fellows, denoting their elevated training in Holocaust and genocide studies. These teachers can then present teacher in-services and conferences when they return to their own districts to promote Holocaust and genocide studies. This will ensure that the program grows exponentially with each graduating class.
